EVE Online Dev Rebranded to Escape Chinese Communist Party

Earlier this month, it was revealed that CCP, the Icelandic developer behind EVE Online, had been bought out by its CEO, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, in a cash-and-crypto deal. The studio was bought out almost a decade ago by Pearl Abyss, of Crimson Desert fame, for double what it was reacquired for.

Following the sale, CCP rebranded to Fenris Creations, and in an all-new interview, the CEO has explained why they changed the face of the company after so many years, and after securing the brand back from Pearl Abyss.

The Other CCP

In a new interview with Games Industry, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson explained that the concept of security independence from Pearl Abyss had been floating around for several years. The split came amicably, resulting in a transaction worth $120 million, with $20 million of that being stumped up in cryptocurrency.

CCP, which had been a name in the gaming space for almost thirty years, no longer exists in that capacity, as Fenris Creations is now the sole identity of the Icelandic firm.

Pétursson explained why that is:

It is an interesting journey of the brand collision between Crowd Control Protections and the Chinese Communist Party.

That is a growing collision. It’s a fight I’m not going to fight. I’m not going to fight the Chinese Communist Party over who is the CCP. Obviously, the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t think of itself as the CCP. That’s a Western construct. They refer to it by a Chinese name. They’re not called the Chinese Communist Party in Iceland either; we call it the Kommúnistaflokkur Kína in Icelandic.

He went on to outline the issues the company had long experienced with the name convention.

For instance, travelling to the United States under the CCP label resulted in questionable impressions from customs agents. In the press, the company was often referred to as ‘the other CCP’.

This move enables CCP to take on a fresh look and feel, and in the words of the CEO, it allows them to more closely associate with their Icelandic heritage.
