Esports World Cup’s $5 Million First Weekend is Running Wild

The Esports World Cup is well and truly underway, and this weekend, four titles will see their grand final played out in front of massive audiences in Riyadh. Apex Legends, VALORANT, FATAL FURY, and Rennsport all have their place at the Esports World Cup, and collectively, they represent a stacked prize pool worth almost $5 million.

This eclectic mix will see tactical shooters, chaotic battle royales, frenetic fighting games, and supreme sim racing all featured on one of the grandest stages in esports.

And this is just the first weekend.

Four Titans, One Stage

VALORANT is taking the majority of the spotlight this weekend, as it’s the first time that the Riot-backed tactical FPS has appeared at the gargantuan esports event in Saudi Arabia. The $70 million EWC has welcomed VALORANT with open arms, putting up a $1.25 million prize pool and bringing in powerhouse organisations like Fnatic, DRX, and Paper Rex.

The grand final on Friday promises to be a banger, and as you read this, the qualifying teams are being whittled down.

Next, we look at Apex Legends, a staple of the esports scene and now a two-time title where the Esports World Cup is concerned. Apex Legends will play host to a grand showdown on Sunday, July 13, and teams like TSM and Alliance are expected to shine.

There’s a massive $2 million pool arranged for Apex Legends, and with 40 participating clubs, it’s one of the most densely populated Esports World Cup games at the event.

FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves is another new title at the Esports World Cup this year, surfacing as an energetic fighting game that has welcomed crossover talent from other games, including Street Fighter. Despite being new to the stage, FATAL FURY has a whopping $1 million prize pool, and the diversity this game offers is unparalleled.

Finally, we look at Rennsport, which will be the first game to wrap up at the Esports World Cup. The grand final is being played right now as I publish this article. The nine organisations that fielded teams for this title have been cut down to just three – BMW M Team, Virtus, and Team Vitality.

Rennsport has a smaller prize pool on the line at $500,000, but it’s still a beloved title with a solid following at the Esports World Cup.
