Epic Says AI Won’t Replace Jobs, But Increase Efficiency

Epic Games comments on the company’s use and experimentation with AI technology. AI isn’t just a major talking point in the video game space; businesses across the board are rushing to be at the forefront of the race to optimize for AI. In the video game industry, Epic is the latest publisher touting how excited they are about the new tech.

Speed and optimization are the focal points of the latest comments from a Fortnite executive at a recent conference. Don’t worry, they are sure to say that AI isn’t coming to kill jobs; it’s simply being brought on board to optimize efficiency.

Fortnite Executive Explains How Epic Games Is Using AI Tools

Stephanie Arnette is a senior external development manager on Fortnite, and during a recent Gamescom Latam panel, she spoke about how the company has been exploring different automated tools to increase efficiency.

“Epic has been exploring different AI tooling that we can use to help support our games,” Arnette said (h/t: GamesRadar+). “I know everyone’s biggest fear is, ‘Oh my god, AI is going to take all our jobs.’ That’s not our goal. The goal is to make us more efficient.”

She would also go on to suggest that something that would take an individual 10 hours to do might suddenly take less time, and noted that AI tooling is being explored in the art realm as well. However, she did not elaborate on how.

Arnette would go on to confidently state that Epic is leaving the charge of whatever AI is implemented into Fortnite, saying, “There really is no opening for a partner to try to put their AI info or tooling into ours, because it’s such a massive, massive company, so it would always be from our direction outward, and not the other way around.”

Recently, Sony executives also bragged about how AI was the future of game development. They are currently working with Bandai Namco in the realm of generative AI. Learn more about that here.
