EA Has Shut Down Servers For An Underrated Battlefield Game

Electronic Arts has officially shut down servers (on PlayStation 4 and XBOX One) tied to one of the most underrated Battlefield games ever made. On the evening of June 22, EA took Battlefield Hardline’s console-based multiplayer platform offline forever, bringing an end to more than ten years of cops-and-robbers-based action.

In social circles, users shared their lamentations as the game was plunged into darkness, with some capturing clips of the final minutes of the game that might not have been a rampant success, but managed to hold together a core community after all these years.

Battlefield Hardline Goes Dark

In March, it was confirmed by the team at Electronic Arts that Battlefield Hardline’s old-gen services would be killed off this June. The game was removed from digital storefronts on May 22, and just last night, online services were taken offline. While this doesn’t impact PC players, those still rocking Hardline on a console somewhere were left mourning the death of the 2015 first-person shooter.

On Reddit, one user shared a gameplay clip of the last two minutes of play on Battlefield Hardline before their connection to the servers was suddenly cut:

In another post, a user branded Battlefield Hardline ‘a decent game for what it was worth’, while sharing a screenshot of a message left by the Battlefield team on the game’s top menu:

We are sorry, but servers for this title have been shut down. Thank you very much for playing!

Battlefield Hardline was a relatively strange release in the typically military-focused first-person shooter series. It was centered around a Hollywood-esque tale of drama, featuring crooked cops, bloodthirsty gangs, and gritty, urban violence.

It dropped in 2015 and enjoyed a series of expansions, but it was eclipsed by the release of Battlefield 1 just one year later. As one of the best-selling games in the series, Battlefield 1 was considered the top game in the franchise for a good while, eradicating much of the buzz around Hardline, which quickly became dated in the shadow of the uber-impressive Battlefield 1.

The series ran downhill after that, with the lacklustre release of Battlefield 5 and the awful failure of Battlefield 2042 leaving an indelible mark on the franchise that was only partially rubbed clean when Battlefield 6 was released in 2025.
