In a new post on Steam, developer and publisher Motion Twin has announced that Update 35 will be the final creative update for Dead Cells.
Dead Cells, a metroidvania roguelite from Motion Twin and Evil Empire, originally launched in 2018 to rave reviews.
Return to Castlevania is the most recent expansion, and also released to strong reception in 2023.
The devs say Update 35 “marks the end of our creative journey on the game”. More specifically, they explain that “it’s crucial not to overextend and risk diminishing the unique charm”.
Today’s post adds that “Evil Empire will be pursuing new adventures”.
Dead Cells instantly became an indie darling on release, and it continues to remain successful. Insider Gaming just interviewed Evil Empire COO Benjamin Laulan in October 2023, as part of The Indie Initiative.
In today’s announcement, Motion Twin also mentions all of the peripheral content coming from the Dead Cells universe.
Motion Twin and Evil Empire announced an animated series based on the core game in June 2023. The series will be set on “a cursed island that has been racked by a strange plague”.
Bobbypills is the studio producing the show, but there still isn’t a concrete release date or window.
Dead Cells will also be adapted into a midweight board game. The latest Kickstarter campaign update, from December 2023, mentions that the game would begin production soon.
So, although Dead Cells will no longer receive fresh DLC after Update 35, there is still plenty more to come from its universe.
Also, the devs say they will “continue to find solutions to make sure that all quality of life issues and bugs are properly fixed across all platforms”.
