The clock is ticking quite literally to the reveal of the next major installment of NetherRealm Studios’ legendary Mortal Kombat series.
A teaser was posted to Twitter both by the official Mortal Kombat account and by series co-creator, Ed Boon. The short clip focuses on the ticking hands of a clock as it counts from nine to 11. Fans naturally assumed that this represented the last three Mortal Kombat games ahead of the official reveal of the 12th entry in the series. At first, it seems like this is the case, but then something strange happens.
Just as the clock hand reaches 12, it begins to stutter and skips over it entirely to land on one. While we can’t say for sure, the prevailing theory online is that this hints at some sort of timeline reset in Mortal Kombat 12 to tackle the increasingly convoluted lore of the series. The last game saw Liu Kang essentially create a new timeline so it’s likely that the series next entry will pick up on that plot thread.
There’s been chatter online that the game could in fact be announced later this month at Sony’s PlayStation Showcase. Numerous industry insiders, including Jez Corden have all added to speculation that Mortal Kombat 12 will be announced that month and this new teaser has added at least some credence to their claims.
In other news, it’s looking like The Boys star Karl Urban will be gearing up to play Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie. The 2021 live-action movie teased the appearance of Cage and according to The Wrap, Urban is in final negotiations to play the fan-favorite character.
Do you think Mortal Kombat 12 could feature a timeline reset?
