Activision has sat down for a new interview to discuss the past, present, and future of Call of Duty, the legendary first-person shooter series that has a new title dropping next week. If you’ve pre-ordered Modern Warfare 4, you can get access from tomorrow, enjoying what looks to be a stellar campaign with an all-new theatre of war.
During the interview, the team also shed light on what comes next, confirming that a future title in the series will kick-start a brand-new sub-franchise. They confirmed that work has already started on that.
Where Does COD Go From Here?
For the longest time, Call of Duty has been a Modern Warfare vs. Black Ops debate, with a few one-off titles sprinkled in over the years for good measure. Think games like Vanguard, Advanced Warfare, and WWII.
In a fresh interview with The Game Business, Activision’s Tyler Bahl, the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, revealed that work on an all-new sub-franchise (not a one-off) has already begun:
We’ve already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork. But we’re really excited about Modern Warfare 4, and that addresses some of that feedback.
For now, the focus is on Modern Warfare 4, but it might not be too long before we hear about what comes next (or next next).
In July 2025, it was claimed that Call of Duty’s 2027 release would be an all-new sub-franchise totally unrelated to anything we’ve ever seen. It was said it would be set in the ‘modern era’ and it wouldn’t be a ‘jetpack-style’ game.
Bizarrely, it was also claimed that there would be a focus on martial arts within the gameplay, with players potentially getting access to hand-to-hand combat mechanics. That story came and went, but it’s now being confirmed, at least in part, by Activision.
