In August 2025, I sat down with Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, to discuss the imminent arrival of Borderlands 4. The ambitious open-world shooter was about to hit the market, and when I asked Pitchford about his expectations for the game, he made a bold promise.
He said that Borderlands 4 would take the series beyond 100 million sales.
It was just announced that Borderlands has passed 100 million lifetime sales. Congratulations to the magician that is Randy Pitchford (he’ll like that).
Borderlands Secures 100 Million Lifetime Copies Sold
In a statement released on the central Borderlands site, it was announced:
And we’ve got some other pretty big news: the Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold! There aren’t many franchises that have ever hit that milestone, and we certainly didn’t get here on our own. For us, it started with that first Borderlands in 2009, and we’ve been excited about everyone who has joined us in the Borderlands along the way.
At Gamescom 2025, I sat down with Randy Pitchford to talk about all things Gearbox and Borderlands, being as we were on the cusp of Borderlands 4, the latest game in the series, being released. He said:
Thinking about Borderlands ‘beyond the game’, it’s so wild to me. I remember I came to Gamescom with Borderlands 1, just trying to scream from the tallest mountain to get anyone to pay attention to it and nobody cared.
A lot of people predicted that Borderlands wasn’t going to work.
Now, here we are with the game franchise, we will break 100 million units with this launch, easy, all in with the franchise.
That’s now cemented in fact, as the series has hit that monumental milestone.
This makes Borderlands the joint-twenty-third best-selling video game franchise of all time. It slots into the charts alongside Gran Turismo and Tomb Raider, sits just behind Star Wars games and the Monster Hunter series, and beats The Witcher, Battlefield, and Halo.
