Battlestate Games, the developer behind Escape from Tarkov, recently revealed a new publishing arm that’s aimed at games that no other publisher wants to touch. They want to help bring to life the paradigm-shifting, boundary-pushing games that perhaps think outside the box and run risks in many ways.
In a recent interview, Nikita Buyanov, the head of the studio at Battlestate Games, revealed why that is. It’s because we need more than the cookie-cutter titles that follow the same formula over and over again.
Risk vs. Reward Ratio
Nikita Buyanov spoke to PCGamesN after revealing the move into publishing during the recent FPS Games Show, hosted by BULKHEAD. The announcement didn’t come as too big a surprise, given that Buyanov had revealed the intention to me earlier this year in another interview.
In a transparent statement, Buyanov stressed that it’s not about the money. It’s more about giving struggling developers shelter and the resources needed to get their games on the market. Buyanov has been instrumental over the years in pushing Escape from Tarkov, the world’s leading extraction shooter, to the forefront of the market.
For the last couple of years, he has been double-dipping, also working with an all-new studio, Rant Games, to produce Fragmentary Order, a hardcore sci-fi shooter.
Speaking to PCGamesN, Buyanov marked the lay of the land:
I just want to see and test those games; the risky games. They can change everything. They can have something special that can change the whole industry – that’s why it’s risky. It might sound risky, look risky, and it’s just something different. It’s what we need right now.
With all the games releasing right now, it’s more or less all the same – the same genres, the same games.
Some risky ideas with risky implementation – some prototypes even – are going to have something in there.
This is our approach: really risky, interesting ideas above potential profits.
Escape from Tarkov has always been one of those ‘risky’ games, boasting an aura and reputation as one of the toughest first-person shooters ever made. It has never held the average gamer’s hand, and it has always had a sense about it as being a drastically unwelcoming game, but despite all that, it has flourished over the years.
