Paramount Games Studio executive comments on game projects no longer in development related to its IPs.
Paramount Games Studio was recently formed and announced its first project, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, at Summer Games Fest. Subsequently, a studio representative named TMNT, SpongeBob SquarePants, Star Trek, and Avatar: The Last Airbender as the studio’s core four IPs.
Paramount Confirms Avatar RPG and Original Ronin Project Cancellation
In an interview with Game File, Shawn Kittelsen, the head of creative at the new studio, confirmed that the previously announced Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG was no longer being developed by the time the studio was formed. The project was also being developed by Saber Interactive and was set to be part of the Avatar Legends Universe. At the time, it was touted as “the biggest video game in franchise history.”
Kittelsen did state that the IP is important enough that a similar project could arise in the future.
“That particular project wasn’t in production when we started this new division,” Kittelsen said. “The Airbender franchise is a high priority for us, so given the right team and opportunity, we would love to bring Aang’s world to life in a AAA game.”
Also, it was confirmed that The Last Ronin is not a continuation of a previously announced project of the same name by THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games. That game is no longer being developed either.
“On the face of it, the pairing of Platinum and The Last Ronin made a lot of sense just from a genre fit standpoint. But when we had the first conversation, the first pitch, it was about so much more than what I expected,” he said.
