Activision is planning to reboot the Halo franchise after being handed the keys in the latest round of Microsoft’s restructuring, according to reports.
A slew of new layoffs hit XBOX yesterday, with Halo Studios among those being affected, and the announcement of the latest changes included stewardship of the Halo franchise being handed to Activision.
No details on forthcoming games were shared, but it’s now been claimed that Activision is planning to reboot the franchise, ushering in a new era for Master Chief.
Halo Set For Reboot, It’s Claimed
The claims come via TechnicalHalo on X, who states that Halo will now launch into “a new chapter” and that existing “lore is not going to be continued.”
Insider Gaming has not been able to verify these comments, and they should be taken with a pinch of salt, but it’s a direction that would make sense, considering the studio changes.
Halo has a proud history spanning back to the first days of XBOX, but it’s fair to say the more recent releases have failed to hit the same levels.
While the first three games in the franchise boast a Metacritic score of 94 and above, the most recent entry, 2021’s Halo Infinite, sits at 87, while Halo 5: Guardians sits at 84.
Halo: Campaign Evolved, the most recent title released for the franchise that saw Master Chief make a PlayStation debut, sits even further back with a Metascore of 80.
It’s now been five years since the last entry in Halo’s main saga, and given that the last two additions to the story hit way below those that came before, it could prove to be the ideal time for a reboot.
However, there will naturally also be some concerns if that approach is taken, and it remains to be seen what Activision has planned.
