Marathon’s New Experimental Mode Arrives Tomorrow

A new update will introduce the Free Kit Frenzy Dire Marsh Sponsored Experimental Queue to Marathon on April 15.

Marathon just received a huge mid-season balancing update, and you can check out the full patch notes here. Just a day after this patch, a new update will arrive, bringing the experimental game mode. Moreover, the duo’s experiments have led Marathon developers to work on making duos a real feature for season 2.

Marathon’s Next Experimental Mode Needs Players to Enter Using Only a Free Sponsored Kit

The game director for Marathon, Ziegler, has revealed through a new X post (formerly Twitter) that the next Experimental mode is Free Kit Frenzy Dire Marsh Sponsored. The new mode will run from April 15 to April 29; the timing could change if the developers discover anything that warrants a change.

Marathon’s Dire Marsh Sponsored will aim to level the playing field for all players upon entering a new map. The mode only allows players who are queuing with a free sponsored kit (white tier), as the challenge is to upgrade after they reach Dire Marsh rather than enter with a full-fledged loadout.

The developers have stated that this experiment aims to better understand Marathon’s “early gear ecosystem”. The team will observe “How the game plays out with low fixed set gear conditions and caps” and “How the zero to hero play works in low starting set gear conditions and caps”, along with any technical issues they come across.

The experimental queue is only available for the Dire Marsh Zone, and players can enter as a premade duo (crew fills off), premade trio, or crew fills into a trio.

In other news, Bungie has offered a deeper look at the state of play with anti-cheat mechanics in Marathon. Additionally, the game’s development budget was reportedly $200 million.
