Nintendo Producer Says Donkey Kong Bananza Could Provide ‘Hints’ for Next Project

A Nintendo producer says concepts from Donkey Kong Bananza may carry into the studio’s next project, whatever that may be.

Donkey Kong Bananza continues to stand out as the premier 3D platformer on the Nintendo Switch 2. While everyone eagerly awaits the next 3D Mario game, DK Bananza was the first title released by the team behind Super Mario Odyssey.

It is known that some elements of Bananza were inspired by the development of Mario Odyssey. Now, one of the developers is discussing how this influence could also apply to the team’s next major game.

Kenta Motokura Believes Bananza Could Provide ‘Hints’ Toward Next Game

Speaking with GamesRadar+ at GDC, Kenta Motokura, Bananza’s producer, explained that he expects some elements from the development of the first 3D Donkey Kong in 25 years to inform their next title.

“I do expect that will be the case where some ideas from Donkey Kong Bananza provide future hints for our next project, as well.”

In the 2025 release, Donkey Kong goes on an adventure with Pauline. Given the nature of the original Donkey Kong game and Pauline’s relationship with the Kong family, there are questions about who this younger version of Pauline is. However, Motokura decided not to address this question, opting instead to leave it to gamers’ imagination.

Motokura participated in a GDC panel discussion on the development of Donkey Kong Bananza. Read some of his comments on the game and the core principles of Nintendo’s first mascot at this link.
