OpTic Texas has fallen short at the first major opportunity of the new Call of Duty League season, on home turf. Last night, the squad made it to the grand final of the CDL Major I tournament in Dallas, Texas, but couldn’t overcome a dominant Paris Gentle Mates side. That final loss came after a perfect upper bracket run that saw OpTic refuse to drop a single map.
Paris proved to be a resilient force, losing 0-3 against OpTic Texas in the upper bracket before returning after wiping FaZe Vegas and eliminating OpTic at the final post.
OpTic Texas Finally Loses a Grand Final
OpTic Texas hadn’t lost a grand final during a Championship Weekend since winning the Call of Duty League Championship in Canada last summer. That was followed up by a win at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, and then the extremely lengthy off-season started in the Call of Duty League space, allowing OpTic to cuddle those trophies as things ran quiet.
It looked like a sure thing heading into Major I in Dallas. OpTic Texas hadn’t been amazing to start the Black Ops 7 season, but the reigning champions quickly dispatched Riyadh Falcons and Minnesota G2 with 3-0 scorelines to push into the winner’s finals against Paris.
Another decisive 3-0 win meant that OpTic Texas was sitting pretty in the grand final and awaiting either FaZe Vegas or Paris to attempt a resurgence. FaZe had gone on a masterful run in the lower bracket but fell in the final seconds of a round 11, game five crash. Before that, Vegas had wiped Boston, the Falcons, LAT, and G2 from the tournament.
OpTic Texas didn’t put on a bad display in the grand final, but the team was bested by Paris Gentle Mates nonetheless. OpTic’s weakness proved to be Search and Destroy, with Paris winning every map in that category, which gave them an easy upper hand – and the closing game.
