New data shows how successful the Nintendo Switch 2 was in its launch year of 2025.
In 2025, Nintendo dedicated itself to launching its Nintendo Switch 2. The console had a massive shadow to overcome, as the original Nintendo Switch was the most successful-selling console in Nintendo’s history. However, with aless than a full year on the market, the Nintendo Switch 2 proved to be a smash success in its own right.
New Data Shows the Nintendo Switch 2 Is on a Historic Trajectory
New data from Circana, shared by Mat Piscatella on Bluesky, shows that in the United States, the Nintendo Switch 2 led the hardware market in both unit and dollar sales for December and for 2025 overall. The PlayStation 5 ranked second in both metrics. Additionally, the Switch 2 sold 4.4 million units in the United States in just seven months.
As such, the Nintendo Switch successor remains the fastest-selling video game console in history. Currently, Switch sales are 35% ahead of PlayStation 4 sales in the same time frame. All of the success comes despite console unit sales for December falling 8% year over year, and in November, spending on video game consoles fell 27%, marking the worst November in terms of spending for the industry in two decades.
