Notorious GameStop Stapler and Switch 2 Auction Hits $100,000

You read that right – the GameStop ‘Staplegate’ stapler and the Switch 2 console it decimated are up for auction in a charity event backed by the retailer. For the next week, people will bid in an auction for the stapler that punched holes in Switch 2 consoles last month, bringing GameStop into the press limelight for all the wrong reasons.

As I write this, the bid stands at a whopping $107,595, and there are still more than six days on the timer.

You Even Get The Staple

The bundle up for grabs in this supersized charity auction includes the Switch 2 (repaired), the punctured box, the stapler, and of course, the staple itself. It’s all neatly contained in a plastic display box, making it perfect for a cabinet or mantelpiece in your home.

Provided you’ve got more than $107,595 to secure it, of course.

It was explained by GameStop that the auction is taking place to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals:

The black stapler used by a GameStop associate who, in a moment of launch night excitement and misjudged enthusiasm, stapled a receipt directly to a customer’s new Nintendo Switch 2 box—puncturing both cardboard and screen in one swift motion. Features authentic field-use wear throughout and retired immediately from service, the stapler now stands as a retail legend born from a half-second decision.

While the incident itself was unfortunate, we hope its legacy serves a greater purpose.

The recipient of the bundle will also receive a certificate of authenticity hand-signed by Ryan Cohen, GameStop’s CEO, who recently declared trading cards the future of the business.

Would you consider throwing down a bid on this auction item, or do you not have that much cash to spare? Let me know your thoughts on the Insider Gaming forum.
