Video game hardware sales fell for the fifth month in a row in May 2025, continuing a trend of gamers not spending money on consoles or accessories. According to the latest data from Circana, general video game hardware sales fell 13% year-over-year in the United States while accessory sales fell 6% year-over-year.
Per the data, overall hardware sales fell from $197 million (M) in May 2024 to $172M this year.

As has been the case for months now, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) was the best-selling console in terms of both dollars and units sold, and actually grew by 3%. The Xbox Series X|S fell 30% year-over-year while the Nintendo Switch dropped 44% compared to May 2024.
Looking at accessories, sales totals dropped from $165M to $154M. The best-selling accessory for the month was the midnight black PS5 DualSense wireless controller.
When looking at full year-to-date sales, hardware sales are down 26% compared to the first five months of 2024. Accessory sales are down 12% year-to-date.
May 2025’s data is the last before the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. When June’s data is released, it should be expected that overall sales will be improved. How much they increase, however, remains to be seen.
