Resident Evil Requiem Director Says Leon is ‘A Bad Match for Horror’

Every fan has been wondering whether Leon Kennedy will be a part of Resident Evil Requiem, and with the director calling the character ‘a bad match for horror,’ everybody is even more confused.

Resident Evil Requiem was announced during Summer Game Fest 2025, finally confirming the new instalment fans have been waiting for. During Capcom’s Spotlight 2025 showcase yesterday, players received more information about the game, including details about the new protagonist and why Leon is not a good match.

Resident Evil Reqiuem’s Director Says Leon’s Lack of Fear Makes Him a Bad Protagonist for Horror Games

Resident Evil Requiem’s director, Koshi Nakanishi, recently appeared on a Creator’s Message video where he spoke about Leon as a protagonist for the title. Nakanishi always “thought about making Leon the protagonist”, but it is “difficult” to make a horror game around a character with an action-hero like personality. Leon would not get scared from something like “a bucket falling”, and no player wants to see a character like him getting “scared by every little thing”. Which is why he is “a bad match for horror”.

That is also the reason why Resident Evil Requiem went with a new protagonist this time, the FBI Intelligence Analyst, Grace Ashcroft. Grace is “introverted and easily scared”, which is a new type of character for the series, but the decision was intentional. The developers wanted the character to experience horror “from the same perspective as the player”. At the same time, as an analyst, Grace is also trained to use weapons and can employ “calm deductive reasoning” in stressful situations.

The rumours say a completely different story, however. According to the person behind all the Resident Evil Requiem leaks, DuskGolem, Leon is the main character for the upcoming title. Players will not see him for some time, but in the final game, you will “play far more as Leon than Grace”, according to the insider. The character should become “more obvious” as marketing continues; they have claimed.
