The Minecraft movie sequel has officially received a new title. Warner Bros. has not only announced the title of the next film but also revealed a contest for creators that could influence it.
On Saturday, May 30, the official Minecraft social media page announced that the next film will be titled “A Minecraft Movie Squared.” It’s also slated to release in theaters on July 23, 2027.
Creator Contest Linked to ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’
According to Variety, the producers of this sequel include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Jason Momoa, and Jill Messick. The executive producers are Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg, and Jonathan Spaihts.
In celebration of the announcement of the upcoming film, the game’s team has also announced the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge. The winner of the challenge will get to attend a private screening of the movie and could potentially see something they built in Minecraft in the official film or in the end credits.
“But there’s a catch: Instead of the entire Overworld (or Nether, for the risk-loving builders out there), you only get a limited space to work with. Everyone has the same canvas and the same blocks to build with – it’s all about how you use them to their full creative potential,” the blog announcing the challenge reveals.
The first Minecraft movie, which starred Jack Black and Jason Momoa, was very successful. It became the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie tie-in, earning $301 million in its first weekend in April 2025. The sequel was first confirmed in October 2025, and when they announced it, they also set June 27, 2027, as the original release date.
