When it comes to the end-of-year game of the year awards, Monster Hunter Wilds will be in the running. However, right now, its reviews would suggest otherwise, as the game is suddenly being bombarded with negative reviews on Steam.
Capcom had a big winner in Monster Hunter World. This created a ton of excitement and expectation for Monster Hunter Wilds. Feb. 28, 2025, came, and delivered Wilds—loved by critics. Players initially loved it, but the reception toward the game is souring with every review.
Monster Hunter Wilds Steam Reviews Are Negative

As of June 20, if you check the Monster Hunter Wilds Steam page, the ‘Recent Reviews’ are now described as Overwhelmingly Negative. Even its ‘All Reviews’ section is listed as Mixed.
This is wild (no pun intended) as Monster Hunter Wilds sits at a phenomenal 88 out of 100 on Metacritic on PS5 and PC, and a higher score of 90 for Xbox Series X.
But PC reviews are all saying the same thing recently: The game’s main content isn’t long enough, and the game runs poorly on PC.
“This game is a mess. It is horribly optimized. There are not that many new monsters or fun fights. The movesets are BORING and it all just feels like a gimmick,” said one player. Another user added: “Doesn’t run even semi well at 1080p, 30 FPS. Crashes my entire PC. It’s a scam and it’s sad.”
In truth, the game’s optimization takes the brunt of the criticism. Another Steam review said: “Game is an un-optimized mess that is wholly and pathetically utterly reliant on fake frames from frame generation and up-scaling which causes the game to somehow look even worse while not improving performance at all.”
The Game Awards 2025 will surely feature Monster Hunter Wilds in several categories. But Capcom must be seeing these reviews and wondering what they can do to improve the situation.
