The long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been extended by the delay until May 2026, and despite the second trailer landing, there are still a lot of questions about GTA 6’s Online Mode.
While GTA 5 made waves upon release, featuring three playable characters in the main story, there’s no denying that it was GTA Online that was the game changer—resulting in a move away from the standard DLC model Rockstar had adopted in the past to instead offering regular online content updates.
If you’re as excited for GTA 6 Online as we are, take a look at the details we’ve got on everything we know so far.
Do we Know if GTA 6 Has an Online Mode?

Rockstar has not officially announced an Online Mode for GTA 6, but there have been murmurings of what’s on the cards and it would be a huge surprise if none was created.
In December 2024, Bloomberg reported that GTA 6 Online is “designed to generate revenue for years into the future,” just like the current interaction has done.
Whether GTA 6 Online has paid-for add-ons or sticks to the Shark Card formula of GTA 5, which provides in-game currency when purchased, remains to be seen, but it’s likely to be angled around the latter. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, and all that.
However, one big remaining question is whether the mode will release immediately or if GTA 6 Online will come a little while after the main game launch, which was the approach Rockstar took with GTA 5.
GTA 6 Online Mode & What to Expect
Speculation on what GTA 6 Online will include is rife, but with the Bloomberg report stating there would be a “significant” Online Mode, and the success of Grand Theft Auto 5 for over a decade setting a high bar, expectations are high.
One big, and potentially controversial, decision revolves around what will happen to the existing world of GTA Online and what, if anything, players can transfer over to GTA 6.
I highly doubt that Rockstar will allow the full transfer of all vehicles and money to GTA 6, but character exporting is likely, potentially with some incentives for those who played the original.
I’d like to see a story arrive in the current GTA Online that sets up the move to the next game in the series, potentially with something like the FIB uncovering all your illicit activities and forcing you on the run. Perhaps, by completing the missions, you’ll get your first vehicle and house in GTA 6 Online.
I’d also want the current world and Los Santos map to remain, even if it is entirely separate from GTA 6, due to the many hours I’ve put into the game. It would be a real shame if they wiped it all away.
