Why Are Xbox Games Going up to $80? Price Increase Explained

Microsoft announced a price increase for Xbox games. Here is everything you need to know about the new price tag, along with an explanation for the decision.

Video game prices initially increased from $60 to $70 with the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2020. For the Switch 2, which launches in June, digital games cost $80, and physical copies can cost up to $98 in some regions.

Console prices have also increased. The PlayStation 4 launched at $399.99, and that increased to $499.99 for the PS5. Meanwhile, the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S both launched at a retail price of $499.99, and Xbox raised the prices again on May 1. It’s become a standard practice to increase prices for every new console generation, and this trend also applies to Xbox accessories and games.

Microsoft provided IGN with an official statement explaining the price increase.

“We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.”

Nintendo had a similar response to the reason for its price increase.

“Number one, we’re unfortunately living in an era where I think inflation is affecting everything,” Bill Trinen, Nintendo’s VP of Player & Product Experience said. “And it’s affecting everything from day-to-day prices, it’s affecting technology and things of that nature.”

When do Xbox Game Prices Increase?

Game prices will remain the same for now, but Xbox is expected to start charging $79.99 for first-party games around the holiday season.

Xbox did not reveal which first-party titles will make the transition first. The time window does align with the next Call of Duty title, which typically launches in October or November. We can confirm that the price increase will impact Fable, as the Release has been delayed until 2026.

In addition, Halo is expected to announce a new game this year, and rumors suggest that Gears of War will receive a new collection in 2025.

This price increase does not affect upcoming releases, such as Doom: The Dark Ages, which is priced at $69.99. Gaming has always been an expensive hobby, and that’s not set to change anytime soon.
