According to a new report, Nexon and Blizzard are set to partner on the publishing rights for the StarCraft IP and the domestic service rights for Overwatch Mobile.
Nexon Enters ‘Main Negotiations’ For New StarCraft IP and Overwatch Mobile
The news comes from a report by the Korean publication MTN, via GamesRadar+. It reveals that NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton were all competing to partner with Blizzard to develop new titles based on the StarCraft IP. Nexon has been selected as “the preferred bidder” and has moved on to “main negotiations” for both Starcraft and Overwatch Mobile. Blizzard has been seeking a domestic developer “since the fourth quarter of last year.”
During the bidding process, it was revealed that there would be “no restrictions on the genre or content type” for the StarCraft IP. Overwatch Mobile will be the next main instalment of the Overwatch IP and will be developed as a MOBA for mobile platforms. It has also been referred to as ‘Overwatch 3’ by some of the bidders. However, the distribution rights for Overwatch Mobile will be limited to Korea and Japan only, which the developers were unhappy about, as they had hoped for global rights.
The report also indicates that the companies presented various pitches for the Starcraft IP during the bidding process with Blizzard, with several companies proposing spin-off titles and other projects. However, what proposal Nexon made to win the bid has not been revealed.
Last year, shortly after StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft II: Campaign Collection were announced for Game Pass, it was revealed that a new StarCraft shooter is in development at Blizzard.
