Clair Obscur: Expedition’s blend of turn-based combat, fantasy, and unbelievable storytelling has earned it the number one spot on OpenCritic’s and Metacritic’s best games lists—making it the highest-rated game of 2025.
Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has slowly picked up steam throughout 2025. It finally launched on April 24, and needless to say, it’s been an instant hit. It’s quite long to beat (offering value for money), and its voice actors have been universally praised for the excellent job they’ve done.
The RPG has received critical acclaim and has established itself as one of this year’s must-play games.
Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 is 2025’s Best Game so Far

A quick glance at Metacritic‘s “Best Games This Year” list shows a new number one—Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Now, yes, it officially shares this score with indie sensation Blue Prince. However, Blue Prince’s score comes from 49 Critic Reviews, whereas Clair Obscur: Expedition is based on 57 Critic Reviews. This is presumably why the RPG gets the nod over Blue Prince (which you definitely need to play).
Furthermore, OpenCritic has Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as its undisputed number one best game of 2025 to date. It sits at number one on 91/100. Split Fiction and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 both sit at a respectable 90/100.
There’s a simple consensus as we head into May 2025, and that’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently the red-hot favorite for the Game of the Year crown.
