Take-Two Interactive and 2K Sports want College Basketball involved in its NBA 2K franchise.
In his latest Extra Points newsletter, Matt Brown has obtained 2K’s proposal to the College Licensing Company (CLC) regarding adding College Basketball teams to future NBA 2K games.
According to the proposal, 2K wanted to use a “non-exclusive model for a limited number of DI basketball teams that would be a 5v5 tournament gameplay format integrated into its NBA 2K game.” Specifically, the model wanted the teams and tournament added to the game’s MyTeam—the card-collecting mode similar to EA’s Ultimate Team—as DLC.

In addition to adding it to NBA 2K, 2K’s proposal said it would “assess the viability of a standalone college basketball game” depending on milestones set for NBA 2K28. Those milestones included reaching $3M in DLC sales.
As far as the number of teams in NBA 2K, the studio wanted to start with 16 teams for the first year, 32 for the second, and 68 for the third.
Ultimately, the CLC recommended going with EA’s exclusive proposal for college basketball games. EA then announced the return of College Basketball games on June 30.
Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw first reported both EA’s and 2K’s interest in college basketball back in December.
