XBOX will begin offering digital entitlements for supported physical games to Insiders next week, with thousands of compatible titles.
As discussions about digital downloads and ownership increased in 2026, XBOX is now testing a solution to this issue using its Insider program for the initial run.
Asha Sharma Announces XBOX Digital Disc Entitlements

In a new tweet, Asha Sharma says XBOX Insiders will soon unlock digital entitlements for supported physical games, with thousands of eligible titles at launch.
“Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving. Starting next week, XBOX Insiders can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games. We’ll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can,” she wrote.
The tweet was accompanied by a video that explained this would be a disc-to-digital solution. This disc-to-digital solution has been rumored for quite some time and was even expected to be revealed this month. Early rumors said not every disc from past XBOX console generations would be supported, but that it would include numerous titles.
Of course, the big event that sparked this digital ownership discussion was Sony’s announcement that it would stop producing physical game discs for PlayStation beginning in 2028.
Since that announcement, Sony has only doubled down on its stance, sending multiple reminders that PlayStation players do not own their games; they are acquiring a digital license that Sony can alter or revoke at any time.
