Will Smith Appears in Trailer for Undawn, a Survival RPG

It was a couple of years ago that Tencent revealed an upcoming free-to-play survival RPG, Undawn. It was slated to be released in 2021, but owing to pushbacks, it still isn’t available – but that’s set to change on June 15th, and pre-registrations are open and ongoing as we speak… Or as you read.

In a strange twist, the latest Undawn trailer was released on YouTube, lasting a whopping 53 seconds and featuring none other than Will Smith – for absolutely no reason whatsoever. It was stated that in the world of Undawn, Will Smith portrays ‘Legendary Survivor’, Trey Jones, and he’s here to help players survive the intense, ‘shattered world’ of Undawn.

Did This One Slip By You?

It’s one of those ‘too-good-to-be-true’ games on paper, and I’ll be honest, it slipped right by me. If there’s one thing I appreciate, it’s a post-apocalyptic, open-world adventure, but for some reason, I never realised that this game was in development.

It’s everything that you’d expect from the genre at first blush:

  • Base construction and survival mechanics
  • An expansive open-world
  • Vehicular combat
  • Customisation elements
  • PvPvE platform

It’s coming to mobile and PC platforms on June 15th, and at the time of publishing this article, more than 2.3 million pre-registrations have been completed. However, there’s something a little ‘generic’ about the game, and it looks like something we’ve seen before. It’s essentially connected to the teams that worked on (or still work on) PUBG, so it’s kind of reminiscent of that game.

Here’s the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it trailer featuring the legend that is Will Smith:

Developed by Tencent’s Lightspeed Studios and Level Infinite, Undawn will likely be one of those games that’s popular within its niche but will never make major waves in a general sense. It’s cool and all that Will Smith is on board, but we don’t really know why, other than the suggestion that Tencent is chasing a bit of clout.

Check out those I Am Legend vibes, though.

Hey – it’s free-to-play, right? If you pre-register for the game, you’ll receive exclusive rewards when it drops on June 15th, and you can give it a try, risk-free, and see how it turns out.
