Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have confirmed our worst fears: GTA 6 has been delayed. This news left gamers worldwide shocked, but if there’s one good thing to come out of it, it’s that we now have a solid GTA 6 release date. That’s all well and good, but why was GTA 6 delayed in the first place?
Many thought that a delay into 2026 was inevitable – and they were right. Rockstar Games likely didn’t make this decision lightly, but it’d be good to know why GTA 6 has been pushed back.
Let’s get into it.
Why Did GTA 6 Get Delayed?
In a press release and post uploaded on social media platforms, Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA 6 was delayed because the team needs extra time to deliver the high level of quality that gamers expect from Grand Theft Auto 6.
They wrote that the goal is to try and exceed those expectations, so extra patience is now needed for Rockstar Games to finesse GTA 6 and apply a little more polish.
It’s as typical a reason for a delay as possible, and it’s what we expected from Rockstar Games. It has been a year and a half since the first trailer was released, and in the time that has passed, we have received nothing in the way of an update from Rockstar Games.
This is, at least, confirmation of a defined release date – we know that GTA 6 will be released on May 26, 2026.
How Many Times Has GTA 6 Been Delayed?
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed once. It was revealed in December 2023, and it was said that it would be released in Fall 2025. The first delay came on May 2, 2025, when Rockstar Games revealed a new release date of May 26, 2026.
GTA 6 might have been delayed until 2026, but we now have that firm date, and it’s almost guaranteed that Rockstar Games will be able to deliver. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
