What Engine Does Helldivers 2 Use? – Answered

helldivers 2 change

For many, Helldivers 2 provides a smooth gameplay experience. Sure, we’ve dealt with countless server-side issues, like the inability to connect or add friends, but the overall gameplay runs like butter most of the time. It’s primarily due to the game’s engine. Here is what you should know about the Helldivers 2 engine!

What is the Helldivers 2 Game Engine?

Believe it or not, the Helldivers 2 engine is extinct. Long before the third-person shooter took the world by storm, the engine in question, Autodesk Stingray, was the same one the team used to create the first Helldivers title on PlayStation consoles in 2015.

The kicker is that Autodesk Stingray was discontinued in 2018, long before Helldivers 2 launched worldwide, but after the game’s development period began.

Speaking about the engine, Pilestedt said: “Our crazy engineers had to do everything, with no support to build the game to parity with other engines. And yes. The project started before it was discontinued.”

What Other Games Use the Autodesk Stingray Engine?

At one point, the Swedish-crafted game engine Autodesk Stingray was immensely popular with developers. Alongside Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2, other notable titles on the Autodesk Stingray engine include:

  • Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide
  • Warhammer: Vermintide 2
  • Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
  • War of the Roses
  • Gauntlet
  • Magicka 2

The most notable titles are the Warhammer games by developer Fatshark. Darktide is another title that launched well after the discontinuation of the 3D game engine.
