Warner Bros Looking To Sell Off Games Division, Report Claims

Warner Bros Discovery appears to be trying to get out of the games business. According to a new report from Financial Times (subscription needed), Warner Bros. is looking at the possibility of selling off at least a part of its games division.

The report comes just two weeks after Warner Bros. Games acquired MultiVersus developer Player First Games.

The report claims that by selling off games would help the company avoid possible lawsuits from various debt investors. Nothing has been finalized, however.

Warner Bros. Games currently owns major IPs like Harry Potter and Mortal Kombat. They are also the publisher being Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the live-service game that was met with a poor response from players and critics alike. It was also a game that cost the company $200 million in revenue.

This isn’t the first time Warner Bros. Games was a potential sale candidate. Back in 2020, it was reported that Microsoft was interested in buying the division in order to get games like Mortal Kombat, Suicide Squad, and others under its umbrella.

It’s unclear, should a sale happen, if Microsoft would once again be interested due to the current situation of the company after its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Warner Bros. Discovery has not responded to multiple requests for comment prior to publishing.

  • It’s weird they bought Player First now this my guess is sell off studios Rocksteady, Netherrealm, and maybe Monolith. This won’t cover all the damage but Zaslav refuses to close down CNN since his daughter works there and for some reason he keeps giving Tony Khan money and then DC Comics is still publishing comics they could shut that down. More write offs could be coming.

  • Not surprised the gaming division has been awful outside Hogwarts it’s all flops Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, Mortal Kombat 1, and Multiversus failed to regain the hype it once had. I don’t know who buys it but WBD seems open to selling things at a loss so maybe anyone can get it maybe the venture capital groups come in that’s just one step closer to closure.

  • Better than the woke agenda garbage they’re spitting out right now (3 out of the 6 playable characters are gay; freeze, boomerang, joker) and its horribly repetitive with tons of bugs that just close the game and reboot. When will these studios learn that by catering to the 5% of the population you’re going to lose a massive amount of money. Instead of rewriting established players go make some new ones. They can’t because they know no one will play them. Sex gender has no place in the world of video games. I don’t ever recall this being an issue in the 1980s or 90s. Now it’s everywhere

    • Their games are ass plain and simple nothing of value was lost but NRS crazed fanboys are coping and going crazy again someone needs to put them in the penitentiary.

  • The gaming division is trash anyway. Microsoft should avoid them they don’t need them. Just let Tencent buy it.

  • Despite their exaggerated claims of success the games were all underperforming. I can’t fully blame Zaslav because these games were greenlit before him but he should have sold the gaming division from day 1 but Hogwarts Legacy clouded judgement. I don’t know if they sell the whole thing they might just sell off studios like NRS and Rocksteady and they won’t keep IP or any of the catalog if sold that remains with WB. So for those thinking MK remains with them if sold not happening there’s money to be made off the licensing just not the games.

  • They should have made a Batman Beyond game and Injustice 3. Blame Ed Boon and the former heads of Rocksteady for that happening they were the reasons why bad decisions were made.

    • Ed’s antics have come back to bite him in the ass the man is near 60 and behaves like a child trolling online this is what happens when you do that

  • NRS fanboys coping again they have got to be special ed MK1 flopped deal with it people didn’t want that garbage they refuse to see it as a flop if the franchise dies good it ended with 11 MS won’t buy them Tencent will as a support team

  • Instead of buying this dumpster fire, Xbox should steal John Tobias from them or just buy his studio bring him back to Tao Feng let him do it his way.

  • I see a ton of misinformation being spread by YouTubers first off the Mortal Kombat license May end up remaining at Warner Bros but the gaming studios will be sold off, next Sony is not acquiring them the names listed were Microsoft and Tencent, I see these idiots saying Bandai Namco and Capcom as well they wouldn’t buy Netherrealm or Mortal Kombat they can’t sell it in mainland Asia or their home country and both are not in that position to make acquisitions Bandai just cancelled a ton of games and Capcom has had game sales go down not to mention I don’t think they would make a move like that. I don’t think Take Two is interested this time around which is why the most likely buyers are Tencent who wouldn’t have to deal with as much legal scrutiny like Microsoft and this means the end for Mortal Kombat since Tencent is Chinese and I don’t see them making a game like Mortal Kombat since it’s banned in China. If anything outside Netherrealm at least I could see Monolith and Rocksteady making Conan and Solomon Kane games. The Mortal Kombat audience I think just lived in delusional land for too long pretending 1 was the best game and best fighter of the generation some even going as far as to say of all time that game didn’t do well and Mortal Kombat is past its prime move on touch grass and let those game devs get the mental help they need since they have phobias of mutilation thanks to Mortal Kombat.

  • I agree with the people who believe Tencent should buy the Mortal Kombat franchise. Take the game back to the roots on why it was popular… which is the lore of Chinese mythology and ninjas. The MK franchise has been ass ever since they steered it into this lame Middle Ages feeling crap. Make the games less gross and focus more on authentic martial art forms.

    • They probably won’t continue it since MK isn’t known or popular in most of Asia only really Russia which it’s now no longer being sold. If they do buy WB Games or a NRS they won’t get the MK IP.

  • WB is for sure selling off WB Games they’re licensing off the IP for games and I assume they keep MK. It would be cool if Sony could secure MK for a Shaolin Monks 2.
