It was recently revealed by Deadline that Vampire Survivors, the BAFTA award-winning indie game that started turning heads following its release in October 2022, is being morphed into an animated television series.
This overnight viral sensation, which boasts intense, fast-paced gameplay, retro-styled graphics, and desperate fights for survival, is set to become a ‘premium animated series’, backed by Story Kitchen, the creators of the Sifu live-action adaptation.
Vampire Survivors is Beautifully Simple
Vampire Survivors is a relatively unique game, tasking players with slaying tens of thousands of constantly-spawning enemies with a range of weapons that are upgraded as each round goes on. It can become stifling very fast, with the relentless waves of enemies pouring across the screen while the player attempts to seek out pick-ups, treasure chests, healing items, and other unlockable items.
It’s monumentally entertaining, and that’s why it has seen so much success in such a short period of time. The developer, poncle, secured two BAFTA awards at the ceremony that took place in March 2023, grabbing the awards for both Best Game and Best Game Design.
I went to WASD London in March and got hands-on with Vampire Survivors for the first time, meeting the developers and checking out their awards, and I was instantly won over by a game that was like nothing I’d ever played before.
Now, an animated series is in the works, according to a report published by Deadline. In a statement amidst the article, the founder of poncle, Luca Galante, said:
The most important thing in Vampire Survivors is the story, so it’s a dream come true to see what started as a little indie game I made on my weekends come to life as an animated TV show! It’s also great to be partnering up with such experienced and talented people to make the show. I do wonder if they’ve realized that there isn’t a single vampire in Vampire Survivors, though.
Despite being a simple-on-the-surface game, Vampire Survivors does have lore and an interesting backstory woven into it, and it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out through an animated series.
