The Elder Scrolls Online Developers Address Crossplay Status

The Elder Scrolls Online has become one of the more popular MMOs of the last decade, but despite the praise that comes from players there is always one question on their mind: where is crossplay?

The game is currently available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, but players can only play with others in the same ecosystem. That means Xbox One and Xbox Series players can play together, but they can’t play with PlayStation or PC. And the same goes with those on other platforms.

During a recent conversation with Kinda Funny Games, game director Rich Lambert and studio director Matt Firor were asked why it hasn’t happened yet and whether or not it’s even possible to achieve.

“We’re working on doing some underlying tech changes that would make it possible,” Firor said about crossplay coming to The Elder Scrolls Online. “We know how important it is. Again, we started working on this game in 2007, [and we] didn’t even think about two platforms much less six or whatever we support now.

“It’s something we known about; it’s something we really want to do. We’re working on the underlying tech for it, and we’ll see if we can make it happen.”

Firor added that Microsoft’s mindset of “everything is an Xbox” can make it easier for the non-technical work to get done. He said that it makes it easier to get agreements done in order to make it possible for everyone.

The crossplay discussion wrapped with both Firor and Lambert being adamant about wanting to implement the feature, but the level of work it takes needs to be understood.

“It’s really hard,” Lambert said with Firor, again, saying that they know how important it is to players.

  • Microsoft owns zenimax, I don’t know why they can’t at the very least make it cross play on Xbox and PC.

  • All I’m hearing is excuses. They can continuously drop content for 10+ years but they struggle to make it cross play. Im not buying it.

  • I would def come back to the game if they made it cross play I have so much on both Xbox an pc accounts it would be amazing to consolidate the 2 even if it was just Xbox an pc I’d be active again in that game

  • PlayStation and X-box fine but not PC with all their mods ,when the other 2 can not mod , Think about what your about to do ,, Your about ready to crush ESO as everyone knows it now … do not allow PC to cross-play ……

  • The people who want this most is the PC crowd. I’ve been playing since launch on Xbox and it’s been a godsend that we don’t have to deal with the modders and hackers that plague the PC gamers. Bringing crossplay into it, especially on Xbox, be prepared to see a huge decline in old players.

  • Cross play between different consoles would be great, PC, no. I’ve not played PC ESO but once upon a time I did play WoW and the Add-ons available for PC drastically benefited the game play. If PC ESO addons are anything close to WoW, Console ESO players would be handicapped and not able to fairly compete in pvp or evenly contribute in pve.

  • There are no mods for eso on pc. You see the same thing you see on concole…Farming bots. But alot less lol.

  • They have al;ready announced they are adding support for add ons to consoles. Why console players would object to that is beyond me. Wiithout the PC add ons many parts olf the game would be tedious. Without add on showing me where survey maps and treasure maps are I would never do them. Craftting takes me long enough as it is with the add ons I cannot image doing daily crafting writs without them. PC doesn’t be default have a min map. The game is much harder without one. So have an add on for that.
