Team Spirit defeated FUT 3-1 to claim the final trophy of the Esports World Cup 2026 in the Grand Final of the Counter-Strike 2 tournament.
The event brought an end to the seven weeks of action at EWC 2026, which saw 25 winners across 24 titles in Paris.
How Spirit took down FUT in the EWC 2026 Grand Final
The contest started on Cache, where FUT seemingly took Spirit by surprise, debuting the roster on the map. That paid off with three rounds to open the contest, but six rounds in a row made it seem that Spirit were in control.
Closely contested rounds to end the map meant it was squared up, and FUT took to the CT side with ease initially, winning the first six rounds of the half to lead 12-6.
Again, Spirit strung rounds together to recover to 12-10 before FUT’s young guns struck with a broken buy to end Spirit’s hopes on the map.
Spirit took the contest to Anubis, a map FUT would have fancied themselves on, but only the pistol truly went in their favor in the first half as Spirit played a proactive and solid CT-side to lead 7-5 on the T-side favored map.
Spirit were seemingly cruising to victory on the CT-side at 11-5 before a strangely disjointed round gave FUT a foothold, eventually leading to overtime.
But in overtime, Spirit found their footing once again as an unchecked angle punished FUT and led to a flawless half for Spirit, converted by Spirit in a sloppily played 4v3 postplant from FUT.
On Ancient, the teams could still not be separated, with FUT finding six T rounds in the first half, and Spirit finding six in the second after Dmitry ‘sh1ro’ Sokolov narrowly denied Dmytro ‘dem0n’ Myroshnychenko a 1v3 game-winning clutch.
In overtime, it was sh1ro again who clutched up in the 1v1, outwitting his opponent to bring up map point. The rollercoaster of a map was finally put to bed as Spirit sneaked the defuse in a 2v2 with FUT’s players helplessly stuck outside of the site.
In truth, FUT always needed that map to have a chance in the Best of 5. Nuke both favors Spirit’s experience and playstyle, demanding a more measured approach that the sharpshooting youngsters can provide.
Finally, the all-important pistol rounds, up until this point FUT’s friend, abandoned them, giving Spirit the perfect start to the T-side of Nuke.
A 10-2 T side first half for Spirit left them with only the simplest of tasks, with FUT likely regretting leaving the map in the pool.
After losing the pistol and conversions, tN1R delievered more impact to win Spirit’s rifle round, and the map win esily followed over the next two rounds as Spirit came out victorious 13-5, winning the Esports World Cup title.
The victory cemented the progress visible in Spirit’s game throughout the event, going from strength to strength and defeating Vitality on their way to claiming the EWC trophy in the Accor Arena.
Where does the EWC 2026 tournament leave Counter-Strike?
The first big arena LAN since the IEM Cologne 2026 Major, the EWC CS2 tournament was under the microscope for any signs of change in the Tier 1 scene.
Prior to the event, the Tier 1 scene could be easily understood as Vitality, Falcons, Spirit, and FURIA at the top of the pile, and for the most part there’s not a great reason to change that, however, a few of the top teams are now in question. MOUZ’s BLAST Bounty success put them in the conversation, but two losses to FUT deflated their claim.
For FURIA, the event’s bracket was a simple opportunity to get to a Grand Final, and the ability of FUT to overcome the FURIA roster is perhaps a worrying sign for the team, but it is perhaps understandable.
In an interview with Brazilian streamer Gaules, retiring IGL Gabriel ‘FalleN’ Toledo revealed that Mareks ‘YEKINDAR’ Gaļinskis was being trialed as IGL on some maps, perhaps trading FURIA’s present level for their future.
For Vitality, the team’s future is also in question, as Vitality will not play with their full roster for the immediate future. With life changing around the Vitality roster, can they compete?
Vitality AWPer Mathieu ‘ZywOo’ Herbaut told Insider Gaming, “I don’t think it’s going to be a big deal for us. We’re just going to play our game, just going to do the easy things, and for us, the main thing is to win. So even though we’re not going to play with the full lineup, I think we’re going to be still a dangerous team to face.”
As far as Falcons are concerned, the team’s loss was hugely consequential, arguably costing the organization $2,000,000 due to its effect on the EWC Club Championship. The team’s failure to deliver here shows they still have a long way to go to add consistency to the roster, despite its undeniable peaks that led to their Cologne Major victory.
Elsewhere, NAVI have huge questions to answer after their lamentable loss to Legacy in the Round of 16. The roster is antithetical to Falcons due to its low ceiling, but they decided not to make a roster change after two titles so far in 2026. Will they regret the decision?
