Information from two different sources has revealed that studio leaders within XBOX are not fans of Game Pass.
Many studio leaders at XBOX believe that making their games available on Game Pass significantly diminishes the value of these titles. The reason is that players can access a lot of these titles at no extra cost right on Day One. For those unaware, Game Pass has multiple Day One releases every single month.
Studio Leaders Believe XBOX Game Pass Day One Releases Make Games Feel Less Valuable
The first details regarding studio leaders’ dissatisfaction with Xbox Game Pass were shared by Jason Schreier on the Triple Click Podcast. Schreier stated that many people in the studio leadership within Xbox “absolutely detest Game Pass”, believing it is destroying the value of their games. They also argue that it diminishes the value of all games in general. According to Schreier, these leaders view Game Pass as detrimental to the gaming industry “because of how it devalues games.”

Jez Corden (WindowsCentral) reached out to his sources and discovered that they share similar views to those expressed by Schreier. A former Xbox studio leader commented that offering games for “free” on their release day sends a message to consumers that these games lack inherent market value. The former leader added that this situation is almost leading players to assume that these games cannot sell on their own, feeling like a “race to zero”.
