Sonic Team Teases More 35th Anniversary Surprises

More surprises are in the works for Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th-anniversary celebration. So far, there have been no major game announcements for Sonic’s 35th anniversary, and while nothing is confirmed yet, the head of Sonic Team says more surprises are on the way.

Takashi Iizuka has done plenty of media and celebrations for the milestone anniversary of Sega’s mascot. In that time, he has spoken about the upcoming Sonic Pico Park game. There have also been plenty of DLC updates to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, but more surprises are on the way.

Takashi Iizuka Says More Sonic Announcements Are Coming

Sonic Adventure Remakes

In an interview with Pocket Tactics, Takashi Iizuka revealed that there are more surprises on the way. He also said that this anniversary is meant to represent and recognize every aspect of the hedgehog’s history that will appeal to fans of all eras.

Some announcements have already been made, while other surprises will need to remain secret for a little longer. I know that Sonic fans are extremely observant, so I must be careful not to provide any unintended clues!

What I can say is that this celebration is for the community that has supported Sonic for 35 years. We hope there will be something that appeals to fans from every era, and that everyone will continue following the official channels for what comes next.

Takashi Iizuka Wants Sonic Games to Feel Authentic

Later in the interview, Iizuka was asked about other gaming genres Sonic could branch into, such as first-person shooters or a Dynasty Warriors-style game. Iizuka says he’d be interested in new experiences for the Sonic characters, but they plan them by considering which characters’ personalities would best influence gameplay styles.

When we consider another genre, we do not want simply to place Sonic characters into an existing type of game. We first ask what would make that experience feel uniquely like Sonic. Speed, action, freedom, and the characters’ personalities all need to influence gameplay styles.

Projects such as racing games and our collaborations with independent developers allow us to experiment with different ideas and reach diverse audiences. I am always interested in experiences that can show fans an unexpected side of the Sonic universe, provided that the concept remains authentic to the characters.

What type of game would you like to see Sonic star in next? Sound off about this story and all others in our official Discord server.
