The Call of Duty “SM2” Project Has Been Shut Down

The fan-made Call of Duty project, known as sm2, has been forced to close down after allegedly receiving a Cease and Desist letter from Activision.

sm2 was a Call of Duty mod based on the Modern Warfare 2 (2009) engine that was being developed by a small group of developers. The game was intended to be a mashup of all the previous Call of Duty titles and was going to be released for free. However, for whatever reason, Activision has apparently decided to shut down the project.

Taking to Twitter, the sm² Twitter account posted, “Today, a team member received a Cease & Desist letter on behalf of Activision Publishing in relation to the sm² project. We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations permanently. Thank you all for your support over the past 2 years.”

Activision is yet to comment (and likely won’t) on why they allegedly decided to issue the Cease and Desist and shut down the sm2 project.

In April, the sm2 project developers announced that the project would be moving from the original Modern Warfare 2 engine (IW4) to the Modern Warfare Remastered engine (H1) because of technical reasons.

You can watch YouTube videos of sm2 on the project’s official YouTube channel.

  1. If I wrote what I really felt about this my comment would get deleted.

Shame on Activision, just like Rockstar and EA, “pooping” on fans from a great height. The very people who made them what they are.
    Sick of all these companies

  2. They had too have people keep playing their broken MW2 game that is being over run by Hackers. If this Free Release would have happened and had even been decent. The Hackers would have stayed with MW2 and alot of people would have moved on. I myself have moved on because of that plug and play hack and won’t be coming back until Activision can figure their crap out with their joke anti cheat. MW2 was a good game for about 1 year and was defeated too fast by Hackers and now it’s a broken game. Good night Call of duty. Good Morning something else…

  3. I am boycotting all Activision products until I am given access to SM2. Someone on the dev team needs to leak their code so the project can continue anonymously. They can’t sue you if they can’t find you.
