Sega’s president has stated that the company thinks “shift towards digital titles is key,” but still has a fondness for physical culture.
The gaming industry has been shaken up ever since Sony announced that it will stop producing discs for PlayStation games from 2028. Since then, we have received some statements from major devs and publishers like Ubisoft. Now, Sega’s president has chimed in with his thoughts about the digital future.
Sega Won’t Completely Abandon Physical, But is Trying to Make the Shift
During a new interview with Famitsu (translated by GamesRadar+), Sega President Shuji Utsumi spoke about the company’s thoughts on the all-digital future and its connection to physical media. Utsumi first spoke about how “the shift towards digital titles is key” with “full games” on both console and PC. The publisher has also observed a surge in the number of players they see playing on PC.
Elaborating on that point, Utsumi spoke about how there are PC players even in regions where “consoles aren’t commonly available”. Hence, he thinks that to develop the market, they need to strengthen their digital products. Utsumi also understands that Japan has a culture for physical media, but digital content needs to “become more global”.

However, Sega isn’t ditching physical media completely in favor of digital. Utsumi spoke about how the company used to develop consoles as well and still has a “fondness for physical culture.” Therefore, they will not be completely abandoning physical media, but at the same time will consider “the important elements of digital media, and simultaneously trying to make a shift.”
