‘You Can Rob Pretty Much Anything’ in GTA 6, Rockstar Reveals

It seems that GTA 6 really is putting the ‘theft’ in Grand Theft Auto, thanks to a recent interview with Rob Nelson, Head of Development at Rockstar North. In a recent sit-down with IGN, Nelson took a deep dive into a GTA 6 demo, unveiling all and sundry about the highly anticipated open-world title that’s dropping next month.

When talking about how the world of Leonida evolves around the player and how they can interact with it, Nelson dropped a juicy tidbit that will have crime-focused players frothing at the bit.

Step aside, convenience store robberies. We’re going bigger in GTA 6.

Steal Everything, All The Time

When showcasing Grand Theft Auto 6 to IGN for their massive interview spread, Rob Nelson decided to commence a robbery. It was around the time he was talking to the team about how the world would evolve, stressing that it won’t be to the same level that it was in Red Dead Redemption 2, where you could see entire towns change as the game progressed and time pushed on.

He did point out that, with all the diversity and dynamic, emerging events in the game, nothing would stop you from going ballistic and stealing everything from everyone.

Well, he didn’t put it that ambitiously.

You can rob pretty much anything. So we can go into this place where you buy headphones, for example, and rob it.

In GTA 5, which was released way back in 2013, players could saunter into convenience stores and hold them up, but anything bigger, like heists, remained locked behind major mission sequences.

Things will be much more open in GTA 6.

It’s not clear in the interview what Rob Nelson was doing when he said this bit, but it’s safe to assume he was panning around the map, or something.

These are all the robbery targets that you can go and use to make money, and that’s very important to the gameplay system loop. You can do that as Jason and Lucia together, or you can do it on your own.

And he, again, stressed how dynamic it all is. You can never fully anticipate when a target will present itself:

I was going to go to a shop, or a bank, or payday loan place and try to rob it. But we went past this cop impound lot, and Jason called it out.

Just saying that we can rob a bank ad hoc is insane. That’s the kind of thing that, in GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2, would have been available after following a very deliberate sequence of events, piecing together plans, hiring teammates, and embarking on a very scripted mission.

But in GTA 6, that kind of thing will be an off-the-cuff action, it sounds like. We can run into a payday loan facility, scoop the loot, and escape into the sunset.

And, again… We can rob pretty much anything.
