It’s been revealed that the new PS5 Slim (the new PlayStation 5) will require an internet connection in order to connect its detachable disc drive.
First posted by Call of Duty Twitter account CharlieINTEL, the information was revealed on the back of the new PS5’s box. “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup”, it reads.
As pointed out by Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, the requirement has raised concerns about the longevity of the console and its requirements. An internet connection requirement means that servers will always be needed, which could be disabled at any point in the future.
Insider Gaming first reported on the PlayStation 5 with a detachable disc drive last year and to our understanding, the internet requirement is a fairly new change. In testing, the internet connection was not required.
The new PlayStation 5 is set to launch in November and will completely replace the old model. Should you choose you just want the new console and not the bundle, it will cost $499.99 with the disc drive and $449.99 without it.
What do you think of the internet requirement for the detachable disc drive PS5?
