Former Zenimax Online developers have revealed the first snippet of Project Mourning Reign at the Insider Gaming Showcase.
What Is Project Mounring Reign?
To learn more about Project Mounring Reign and how it came to be, we sat down with the founder of Iron Root Studios, Quentin Cobb.
As explained in the interview by Quentin, Project Mourning Reign will be a single-player action-adventure solarpunk game, which will be fairly small in scope.
Quentin cites Uncharted 1 in his explanation of the project, saying he thinks the game is similar in that it is a small game, but it did a great job of introducing the player to the characters and the world. Quentin says that the actors, art direction, and writing are “well on their way”.

The Studio Behind Project Mounring Reign
Iron Root Games was founded following the cancellation of an unannounced project at Zenimax Online Studios in 2025, when Cobb and other developers affected by the subsequent layoffs decided to form the studio. Until now, the majority of the team had been supported by the severance package they received following the cancellation of the Zenimax Online Studios project and the studio’s layoffs.
The team initially started as developers who came from Zenimax Online Studios, but has since added developers from other studios. At this time, everyone at Iron Root Games has been affected by the industry-wide layoffs.
Project Mounring Reign has been in development since September 2025 and is still very early, but the team is working towards completing the game’s demo by the end of July.
