In the most recent financial release published by the company, Sony revealed that a whopping 54.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been shipped worldwide since the platform was released in 2020. In Q3 FY23 alone, 8.2 million consoles were shipped, marking an increase year-on-year of more than 1.1 million units. In the transparent financial document, it was also revealed that in Q3 FY23, more than 89 million games were sold across the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 platforms.

Exponential Growth

Sony continues to dominate this generation of gaming with the PlayStation 5, which is going from strength to strength over time. In the recent financial update, Sony reported a record quarterly profit in its gaming arm, beating expectations and soaring to total revenue in the ‘Game & Network Services Segment’ of $9.5 billion.

Looking ahead, the financial report spoke of further expectations for the first quarter of 2024 (Q4 FY23):

Sales are expected to be lower than the November forecast, mainly due to an expected decrease in sales of
hardware resulting from lower unit sales, partially offset by the impact of foreign exchange rates and an expected
increase in sales of non-first-party titles including add-on content.

What might be surprising is that the numbers suggest plenty of sales are still occurring on the PlayStation 4 platform, which over time is becoming a legacy console in the overwhelming successful streak of the PlayStation 5.
