Onimusha: Way of the Sword Honors the Series’ Legacy

Onimusha is finally returning this September, with Capcom releasing its first game in the franchise in two decades, Way of the Sword. In a new interview, the game director discusses how this latest title pays homage to past games in the series.

While there are no direct connections between the past series and this reboot, it was still important to pay tribute to the games that paved the way. The forthcoming game will do that by evolving some elements from older titles.

Speaking to Game Informer, the game’s director, Satoru Nihei, explained that some of the homages to the Onimusha games can be found in the enemies you battle in Way of the Sword.

“So there’s no direct kind of connection to the old games in the game world [of Onimusha: Way of the Sword], but we have tried to pay homage to some of the elements from those older games,” Nihei says. “So some of the enemies you’ll see, for instance, are based on some older enemies; that’s so fans of the series have something they can touch base with.”

Still, the enemies in the game are brand new, so while they may draw on elements from past photos, they are remixed for a new generation.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on Sony PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and the XBOX Series family of consoles on September 4. Insider Gaming will continue to monitor the game and report any updates in the lead-up to its launch.
