Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Fall Sharply in Japan Following Price Hike

In the week following the Nintendo Switch 2’s price hike in Japan, the console sold fewer than 40,000 units in the region.

Western countries have until September 1 to get their hands on a Nintendo Switch 2 before the price increases. However, in Japan, the price increase took effect on May 25, raising the price from nearly ¥50,000 to approximately ¥60,000. Almost immediately, console sales were affected.

Famitsu’s hardware sales charts for Japan reported that the system sold only 31,751 units in the week of May 25 to May 31. This was a decrease from the previously reported 247,880 units sold the week prior. The original Nintendo Switch also saw a big decrease. Last week, the OG Switch sold only 229 units. The week prior, the console had moved 2,731 units.

What’s Next for Nintendo Switch 2?

The Nintendo Switch 2 was released a year ago this week. With a rumored Nintendo Direct presentation next week, many are hoping that the gaming juggernaut will begin announcing some of the tentpole releases that will anchor this gaming generation not only next year but also for the rest of the life cycle.

It is rumored that a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be released this year, potentially as the major holiday game. However, as everyone continues to wait for the announcement of the next 3D Mario, nearly 10 years since the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, that game is not expected until at least 2027.
