In 2010, Obsidian and Bethesda pushed to market a game that remains a popular cult classic today. That was, of course, Fallout: New Vegas, widely considered by many to be the best Fallout game ever made. In case you’ve been living under some irradiated rock, New Vegas has been back in the news of late because of rumors surrounding a remaster or even a sequel.
In a recent interview, Chris Avellone, former Obsidian veteran and a writer of some of the most memorable Fallout sequences ever made, mentioned the words ‘New Vegas 2’, whipping the community into a frenzy.
New Vegas 2 Won’t Be a Thing
Chris Avellone appeared in a recent interview that lasted several hours. During that interview, he talked extensively about Van Buren, the cancelled Fallout project that would have been the real Fallout 3. These are topics that I spoke to Avellone about during a recent episode of Access Granted.
He explained how some ideas around the Van Buren concept were rehashed into Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, years after the ‘original Fallout 3’ project was shut down. For instance, the events of the Lonesome Road DLC would have eventually pushed into Van Buren’s story.
That’s why all those nukes go off, because I’m like, ‘well, I need to destabilize some regions.’
Not wipe out factions, but I need to shake up the Brotherhood, I need to shake up the NCR, I need to have them even more at each other’s throats in California.
Avellone then dropped a bombshell (pun kind of intended), stating that Fallout: New Vegas 2 would have expanded the Van Buren content that never saw the light of day. With Van Buren having died a death, New Vegas 2 would have been an outlet for that scrapped content, pushing into a realm not yet explored properly by Bethesda Game Studios.
Note: The third season of the Fallout television series might be going that way.
Per Avellone’s comments:
That was the reason for some of the pre-cursor decisions for some of the DLC stuff and some of the stuff in core New Vegas. When we still thought we’d be able to do a New Vegas 2, or whatever the title would be, but that quickly evaporated.
Unfortunately, the legendary writer and designer then shut down hopes by stating his clear belief about another New Vegas title surfacing: ‘It will not happen in the next six years at least, if ever.’
