James McCaffrey, the voice actor known for playing the titular Max Payne in the video games of the same name, has died at the age of 65.
According to TMZ, McCaffrey died after battling cancer. McCaffrey voiced Payne in three games over his career, the last being Max Payne 3 in 2012.
“One of Dick Wolf’s proteges (“”Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film,” a rep for the actor told TMZ. “Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.”
Though TMZ confirmed his death, McCaffrey’s friend and fellow actor Kevin Dillon was the first to report the actor’s death via an Instagram post.
“#rip James McCaffrey we were lucky to have known you. my best friend you will be missed,” he said.
As of writing, Remedy Entertainment, the developers of the original Max Payne games as well as the upcoming remakes of the first two games, has yet to release a statement on McCaffrey’s passing. It’s unclear if McCaffrey was a part of those remakes.
