According to Nintendo’s latest financial release for the fiscal year ending March 2024, both Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Princess Peach: Showtime hit 1 million units sold.
The Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake only just released in mid-February 2024 and has already reached 1.12 million units sold.
Princess Peach: Showtime launched late last March and sold 1.22 million units. These numbers refer to global results, but it’s certainly still impressive. That’s certainly a decent pace, although some recent indie surprises like Palworld hit 1 million copies sold as quickly as a single day.
Both Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Princess Peach: Showtime maintain solid ratings from both critics and fans on Metacritic.
Although Nintendo finally announced it will reveal the Switch successor in this fiscal year, titles for the current gen like Mario vs. Donkey Kong are still thriving. In fact, as of February 2024, the Nintendo Switch had sold over 139 million units.
After confirming the new device will be revealed, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa announced a new Nintendo Direct for June 2024. However, Nintendo made it very clear that the direct scheduled for June will not feature the next Switch device.
There are some recent claims that suggest the Switch successor will be backwards compatible. So, it’s possible that games like Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and those announced at the next direct, could have a place in the next gen.
