Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is experiencing a major outage in Europe as the europe-west2 region struggles with an unidentified issue. In the area, major services that rely on Google’s cloud services for their backbone have started reporting issues, including the digital payment platform provider, Revolut.
However, beyond the technical infrastructure that is being plagued by these issues, it’s safe to assume that some gaming services will also be impacted. For instance, Electronic Arts relies on Google’s cloud services for real-time routing for game servers, so it’s safe to assume that users in Europe might experience issues on any EA-backed games.
GCP Struggles in Europe-West2
The Google Cloud status page started reporting an issue with ‘multiple services’ in europe-west2 just before 11 AM BST. The services impacted included:
- Google App Engine
- Google BigQuery
- VMWare Engine
- Network Connectivity
- Kubernetes
- Google Compute Engine
- Cloud NAT
- Cloud Firestore
- Apigee
- AlloyDB
While no gaming services have been explicitly impacted by this outage, it’s safe to assume that they could be. It’s not clear if any major operators, like PlayStation or XBOX, will have any systems knocked out of line by this outage.
It’s also worth stressing again that this is not impacting any region outside Europe. North America remains untouched by this outage.
Some of the systems impacted are relied on for networking, server scaling, and player distribution mechanics, while others use Google’s cloud systems to store digital data, saves, and accredition information. You might experience issues a) getting into games, and b) successfully playing them once you have gained access.
