Mafia: The Old Country Devs Say Game Isn’t Short Just Because It’s Only $50

Mafia: The Old Country developers insist the game’s length isn’t short, despite some players assuming it is due to its $50 price point.

Mafia: the Old Country, set for release on August 8, is bringing the franchise back to its roots in Sicilian Italy. Hangar 13 has made big calls, including the decision to scrap the open-world approach from Mafia 3.

A $50 price point falls below what has become the industry standard, leading some to suggest the length of the game is short as a result, but developers have rebuffed those beliefs.

Mafia: The Old Country Will Make Players ‘Super Happy’

Speaking to IGN, Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes insisted players won’t be disappointed by the length of the game, with “all the depth you’d expect in terms of dialogue and the world that has been created. He added that “no one needs to be concerned about the quality of the game or it being super short.”

While Baynes did not reveal exactly what the average completion time for Mafia: The Old Country will be, he told players to expect a “Mafia 1, Mafia 2 style experience,” and predicted that “everyone’s going to be super happy.”

The first two games in the series clocked in at around 10-14 hours of completion time, so the comments suggest there could be a similar sort of length. It certainly doesn’t seem like a huge endeavour lies ahead, like the 50ish hours for full completion in Mafia 3.

Mafia 3’s open-world approach was an anomaly in the series, however, which played a big part in the completion length, but the switch to a more linear style has been welcomed by players. On the topic, game director Alex Cox revealed that direct feedback from Mafia Definitive Edition played a huge role.

“We got a response from the remake that [the Definitive Edition] was the kind of Mafia game that a lot of players wanted to play,” he explained.

“Obviously, we were going through a big engine revision as well for this game too, so we wanted to keep it quite focused on what we think Mafia does best, which is telling great stories.”
