League of Legends to Add Voice Modifiers for Voice Chat

Dataminers have discovered a new feature on the League of Legends PBE, which might change opinions on LoL voice chat.

Back in March earlier this year, Riot Games confirmed that voice chat is coming to LoL, but not for a long time.

Now, Skin Spotlights has discovered “Voice Skins” in the PBE files that will allow LoL players to change their voice.

Whether this would allow players to sound like champions or simply change the tone of their voice remains to be seen.

Still, voice filters would allow players to have more privacy and could help women avoid sexist remarks.

How Will Voice Chat Work in LoL?

In addition to the VoiceMod technology being used for voice changers, regular leaker LoL Leaks has outlined more supposed LoL Voice Chat features.

The account claims that the newly revealed voice chat itself will be optional, with players able to opt into team and party-only chats.

Additionally, Voice Chat will require players to have Honor Level 3 or higher and no chat restrictions.

It appears Riot are taking multiple steps to avoid chat toxicity, including recording all voice chats to verify reports.

Voice chat will only be enabled if players consent to having their voice recorded and possibly reviewed.

Still, the community have a mixture of doubts and optimism over the upcoming feature.

LoL streamer NoArmWhatley, who typically plays top lane, worries that bot lanes will ruin the chat feature, tweeting:

“Bot lane is a Duo Lane, 90% of the comms will just be flooded by them coordinating. If I’m top, I don’t want to hear my bot yapping for 15 mins while I’m playing 1v1.”

Meanwhile, pro player Ilias ‘nuc’ Bizriken remains cautiously optimistic, saying:

“If it’s ever real, sure there’ll be tons of negative aspects that need to be addressed and minimized as quickly as possible… but the content it could bring from a Twitch spectator perspective is insane.”
