NVIDIA’s prolific CEO, Jensen Huang, has found himself at the centre of an internal investigation arranged by the company after it came to light that he’d been courting a suspected Chinese spy. In an official statement from the firm, it was stated that NVIDIA has ‘no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets were compromised.’
Huang is reportedly fully supportive of the investigation and has offered his cooperation. In an internal message to his team at NVIDIA, Huang apologized to his family and admitted being unfaithful, saying that his ‘actions hurt her and (his) children.’
Huang Investigated After Adulterous Revelation
The Financial Times published an internal message sent to NVIDIA employees from Jensen Huang earlier today, November 8th. In the message, Huang wrote:
I owe my family and all of you an apology. I was unfaithful to my wife. My actions hurt her and our children. There is no excuse for what I did. I am deeply sorry.
This prompted NVIDIA’s Board to file an official announcement that an internal investigation would begin, designed to examine Huang’s actions. The CEO, who founded NVIDIA alongside partners and gave the company its name in the early 1990s, has held his position since the very inception of the firm.
He’s arguably one of the most recognizable tech CEOs in the world and boasts a net worth of around $162 billion.
On Friday, November 6th, reports emerged stating that the US government had reason to believe that Huang had engaged in a romantic relationship with a Chinese spy. Memos surfaced earlier this year, naming ‘Alice Huang’, a Megaspeed executive, followed by pictures of the couple together.
At the time, NVIDIA declined to comment on the situation, but towards the end of October, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman stated that ‘The report in question is based on groundless speculation and is nothing more than an attempt to smear China.’
Here’s the full statement from NVIDIA’s Board:
The NVIDIA Board is initiating an independent investigation in light of recent reporting that founder and CEO Jensen Huang has been the target of a foreign intelligence effort.
A committee of independent directors, assisted by outside independent counsel, will oversee the investigation.
The Board prioritizes U.S. national and economic security, which is paramount to the interests of NVIDIA and its shareholders.
While the Board has no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets were compromised, the Board’s inquiry will examine all available information.
Jensen fully supports the review and has committed to cooperating with it.
The Board has confidence in Jensen and his leadership team and will provide further updates as appropriate.
It has been stated several times that it’s unclear if any sensitive information was revealed by Huang.
